April 29, 2015: Biodiversity loss on islands are occurring at an alarming rate and invasive alien species on island ecosystems are the leading cause. In an effort to address this challenge, the Director of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and Chief Executive Officer of Island Conservation formally adopted a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) during the annual Trilateral Committee meeting in San Diego, California. This commitment further strengthens their 17-year old conservation partnership.
The MoU seeks to promote an integrated and coordinated approach to protecting, restoring, and managing native populations of biodiversity impacted by invasive alien species. Activities under this agreement include project implementation, information exchange, education and training, coordination, inventorying and monitoring and sharing of resources as appropriate.
Protecting island ecosystems and its imperiled species is a priority for the partners of the Trilateral Committee. Successful conservation is achieved through collaboration and there is an opportunity for others to join this effort.
