Para lograr que los pastizales sean más resilientes, establecimos la Red de Pastoreo Sostenible como una colaboración entre varios entes dedicados a la conservación (originalmente IMC Vida Silvestre A.C., Bird Conservancy of the Rockies (BCR), la Universidad Autónoma de Nuevo León, y ahora Especies, Sociedad y Hábitat, A.C. (ESHAC) y Evaluación Integral y Restauración de Hábitat, A.C (EIRHA)) para reconocer y apoyar a los ganaderos que luchan para mantener la salud del pastizal nativo que los sostiene, y también sostiene a la vida silvestre que deseamos conservar. Las comunidades que residen en estos ecosistemas, así como su economía regional, dependen de la salud, productividad y buen manejo de los pastizales desérticos. Por estas razones, el Desierto Chihuahuense es un enfoque natural de nuestros esfuerzos para conectar las aves, la gente y la tierra.
La importancia de la ganadería
El norte de México es muy conocido por la actividad ganadera. Esta actividad se transmite orgullosamente de generación en generación. El trabajo arduo en conjunto con el conocimiento de la ganadería y el pastizal, provee la carne de alta calidad para México y EEUU.
Para lograr esta calidad, no es nada fácil, se enfrenta a la sequía, el incremento de arbustos, los cambios en el precio del ganado, el aumento de los gastos anuales y la pérdida de interés por parte de la misma familia, entre otras dificultades. Es tentador darse por vencido y vender o rentar el rancho a un precio muy alto, para convertirlo en agricultura. Pero aún hay ganaderos que no se dan por vencidos, son valientes y resilientes.

El pastizal ha sufrido por décadas la carga de ganado excesiva y poco descanso del pastoreo, generando menos reproducción de pastos, más reproducción de arbustos y más suelo desnudo. Aun con esto los pastizales tienen resiliencia al cambio. Sin embargo, el suelo desnudo hace más vulnerable al pastizal para enfrentar la sequía. Los pastos no alcanzan su crecimiento máximo y esto provoca gastar más dinero en alimentar al ganado o la depreciación del valor del mismo.
